Question by Brittany E: Can a business refuse to redeem gift certificate?
I went to the nail spa yesterday with a gift certificate that my friend got me a few months ago. The spa owner refused to redeem it since the nail spa is now owned by someone else. The name of the salon never changed, just the ownership and management. They made me pay for the full amount of the spa treatment and said that the owner will call me tomorrow. I'm just wondering if there is anything legal that I can do or say to back me up.

This happens all the time. A great coupon or gift certificate is issued and the company claims that they are under new management.

If you have time and patience, the best thing you can do is file a claim with the BBB:

I've had success with them before but mostly with the larger corporations. Good luck.
